data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It entered into force<strong> on 12 February 2025<\/strong>.<\/p><h2><strong>1. Background and timeline<\/strong><\/h2><p>\ud83d\udcc5 <strong>Most provisions will apply from 12 August 2026<\/strong>, following a transitional period of 18 months.<br \/>\ud83d\udcc8 Further requirements will be phased in progressively until 2040.<\/p><p>The PPWR replaces the previous EU Packaging Directive and has <strong>direct effect<\/strong> in all EU Member States \u2013 without the need for national transposition measures. In Germany, large parts of the existing Packaging Act (VerpackG) will be repealed or adapted to the new Regulation by August 2026.<\/p><h2><strong>2. What are the key changes?<\/strong><\/h2><h3><strong>a) Design for Recycling<\/strong><\/h3><p>From <strong>2030<\/strong> onwards, only packaging that is fully recyclable in accordance with strict EU criteria may be placed on the market.<\/p><h3><strong>b) Minimum recycled content<\/strong><\/h3><p>Plastic packaging will be required to contain a prescribed minimum proportion of recycled material, with quotas increasing over time.<\/p><h3><strong>c) Reduction of packaging waste<\/strong><\/h3><p>By <strong>2040<\/strong>, packaging waste per capita is to be reduced by <strong>15%<\/strong> EU-wide compared to 2018 levels.<\/p><h3><strong>d) Reuse and refill systems<\/strong><\/h3><p>From 2030, e-commerce companies will be required to meet certain <strong>reuse targets<\/strong> or participate in equivalent systems.<\/p><h3><strong>e) Ban on oversized and unnecessary packaging<\/strong><\/h3><p>From 2030, <strong>the empty space ratio in shipping packaging may not exceed 50%.<\/strong> Single-use packaging will be prohibited in specific sectors.<\/p><h3><strong>f) Ban on harmful substances<\/strong><\/h3><p>Packaging in contact with food may not contain <strong>PFAS or comparable harmful substances<\/strong>.<\/p><h3><strong>g) Harmonised labelling<\/strong><\/h3><p>All packaging will be required to bear standardised symbols and information on <strong>material composition and disposal <\/strong>(e.g. pictograms, QR codes).<\/p><h3><strong>h) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)<\/strong><\/h3><p>Producers, importers and distributors must register with a national EPR register in each EU country where they place packaging on the market \u2013 including <strong>financing the collection, sorting and recovery of packaging waste<\/strong>.<\/p><h2><strong>4. How is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) changing?<\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>EPR obligations will be harmonised and expanded across the EU<\/strong>.
